How
to choose an ideal yacht broker.
You
should choose your yacht broker as you would choose your doctor, lawyer
or insurance agent...very carefully.
Meet your broker in person to see if he is someone you feel comfortable
with, in Florida yacht brokers are licensed and bonded, confirm this,
ask for client and bank references, an ethical broker will be happy
to provide these testimonials.
Determine if your broker is familiar with yachts in the size and price
range you are interested in and is a member of The Yacht Council, the
industry multiple listing service. When you have found the right broker,
stick with him and let him do his job. Do not create competition and
confusion by calling other brokers. The broker you have chosen will
be more effective when he knows he has your loyalty and confidence.
A competent broker can save you money, time and often frustration. He
knows the marketplace, has knowledge of recent comparable sales and
won't waste your time with over priced boats and insincere sellers.
He will not encourage unrealistic expectations, or send you on wild
goose chases to view unsuitable vessels. Beware of brokers who promise
to find you a steal in order to get your attention, ethical brokers
will not engage in such time wasting exercises.
Expect your broker to provide the following services: Personal inspection
and previewing yachts that could be of interest to you. Separate escrow
accounts for your funds and deposits. Clear explicit contracts and purchase
and sale agreements. Assistance in choosing competent licensed surveyors.
Most brokers will attend the sea trial and observe the survey to protect
your interests and observe first hand what the results are, and to assist
if after survey re-negotiation is necessary. Assistance in obtaining
marine financing, marine insurance, yacht repair facilities, dockage,
crew etc. The list is endless and does not end with the closing of the
sale.
In summary, your broker will be a skilled professional in a highly competitive
services business who knows you will not return or recommend him to
others if you are not completely satisfied with services rendered.
